Pin It and Do It: Double Failure

I admit I've gotten cocky. I see a recipe, bam, I make it and it's great. But lately I've made two recipes that didn't turn out so well.
The first one I didn't even take pictures. It wasn't that it was so bad. I was so disappointed that I couldn't take pictures.

I had such high hopes for this one but it was so bland. I added red pepper flakes but it lacked any zing. Fail.
This one I did take pictures of. I high hopes for it since it uses the crockpot and uses cube steak which I can find pretty cheap. But no.

Here's my picture:
Looks like dog food huh? I used 2 lbs of cubed steak, 2 cans of ready to eat mushroom soup, 1 packet of onion soup mix, and 3/4 cup of water. And it was way too salty to eat. I don't know if it was the mushroom soup I used or what. Also the meat was a little overcooked. I cooked on low for 9 hours. If I made it again I would cook for a shorter period of time (ie not on a work day).
Have you made something that didn't turn out recently?

  1. I know what you mean Linda. With the rise of Pinterest I guess several 'failure' sites have cropped up. Here is an article about it. http://amarillo.com/lifestyle/features/2012-08-24/sites-poke-fun-craft-failures-pinterest I have two boards for recipes one titled Good eats to try and then on Good eats tried and kept. Once I've tried it and like it I move it over to the kept one if not I delete it completely.

  2. I made that cube steak recipe about a month ago and it turned out yummy, everyone loved it. Sorry it didn't work for you.
    Here is my recipe

  3. The cubed steak looks a bit dry, I hope it didn't taste that way. I haven't cooked much from Pinterest (yet the pins seem to be multiplying...), so I can't share my cooking experience when it comes to that.

My latest "failure" was a naan recipe that seemed utterly foolproof, but one time I added too much flour and water and the dough ended up too sticky :/

  4. I've failed at many recipes. I have more success with ones that start with fresh ingredients rather than canned and packets. The packets, such as the soup are so salty. Don't worry, keep trying you will get better at recipe selection which goes a long way toward a great tasting dish at the end.

  5. I know what you mean - and sometimes things that look great don't taste great. Good luck with your next tries. Have a super week.

  6. Over the years I've gotten really good at knowing if a recipe will work. But I made a pumpkin black bean soup last year that nothing could save. It tasted fine, just utterly bland. No amount of spices seemed to help it.

If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell ya....lol

  8. Oh, too bad! I am with you - not every recipe turns out well, and often I make my own mistakes on top of that (getting the wrong ingredients, etc.). Your next adventures will be better!

  9. Hey, at least you're trying! I haven't really experimented with food lately and I think you're doing great. Not all of them will turn out but remember that feeling of elation when they do!!

  10. I made a fish dish recently that was just awful, and I never have luck making veal piccata; it always comes out tough.

  11. Crazy!! this sounds pretty similar to the pot roast that I make (though mine isn't cubed...it's just the roast). I use one can of mushroom soup, though. I wonder if maybe if you used low sodium soup if that would help? I've also tossed in a cup of red wine for good measure.

Sorry about the double failure. I've had some duds on Pinterest, too.
