Bathroom Remodel

Over the weekend, I went over to Dad's to help him with some yard work. While I was there we started talking about his main bathroom. He's been wanting to remodel it for a while. Dad's the DIY type and has all the new fixtures (sink, cabinets, tub) but he lacks the strength to do it. Since I tend to be over zealous, I offered to help gut and remodel the bathroom. Yeah I know next to nothing about plumbing. I think I've seen The Old House a few too many times! But I'm fascinated with the idea of learning and creating something. Here are some pictures to show you what I'd love to do with his bathroom:

If I do go through it with, Dad will be without water for a few days. So he'd have to stay with us or at a hotel til it was all done. Kind of scary. I'd really like to try my hand at remodeling but it's a big commitment. Think I am over my head?

  1. Good luck. Every time Dave and I have tried some sort of home improvement project, it always ends up taking twice as long and costing 3 times as much, because we definitely DO get in over our heads & then we have to hire a professional to fix what we screwed up. :-)

  2. I would caution that if you are new to remodelling a bathroom it will take 5 or 10 times longer than you expect.
I've done maybe a dozen bathrooms and if you are doing a gut and refit it is a lot of work.
Make sure you know how to do every part of job properly before you start it.
Having said that a a well done home job can be better than a professional one. Bottom line is you care about how it will look in the long run, a professional wants to get it done on time and at cost.

  3. I totally think you can do this but one HUGE piece of advice. Have a plan laid out exactly what you want and research research research so you know what you are doing. I LOVE DIY house jobs! I can't wait to see how it all turns out. I love the idea of blue-ish bathrooms! Wish we had that color scheme in our house!

  5. Having just survived an addition and renovation on our home barely a year ago, I would suggest you be the general contractor and hire your subs. You do the design and over see EVERYTHING... maybe you can do the framing, sheetrock and even the tiling, but hire a licensed plumber to do the plumbing parts. You don't want to mess with leaks behind your walls and under your floors.

I love your design ideas! Blue is so soothing in a bathroom. My new master bath is grays and teal, which I love, too. I have river stones as the floor in the shower with a bench in it and full glass doors... omg it's heaven. I still can't believe it's mine!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do a great job no matter which route you take! :D

  6. These are all gorgeous bathrooms! I love the tile in the last picture - I'm going to save it to my inspiration file.

I've never done a gut/renovation job before - but I'd definitely hire a plumber for the that part of it. The rest I'd research first, but I don't think it's necessarily hard. Home Depot has all those DIY classes on Saturdays - maybe you could go and pick up some tips!
