October Graphic Novel Review

I love the time period on this one. But I was a little confused as I'm not well versed in Luke Cage's story. I'm watching the Netflix show and enjoying. I'll be looking for more about Luke in the future.

Wonder Woman: Earth One
I admit I know very little about Wonder Woman's orgins. I thought this was good. Graphics were amazing.

Star Wars: Vader Down
I don't know if this is cannon but I loved this one. Funny. The writers obviously captured the characters beautifully.

Girl In Dior
Cute fictional story about a model for Dior in the early days of Dior. Drawings were good. Great story.

Two Quick Reviews

I don't remember how I heard about Dirty River but I'm so glad I read it. I loved Piepzna-Samarainha's voice. Even though she talks about tough topics-abuse, poverty-she tells her story so well that it was enjoyable to read. There was some poetry sprinkled through (Piepzna-Samarainha's a spoken word poet) which I actually enjoyed. I'm not normally a poetry fan. Highly recommended.

I've enjoyed watching Cat Cora on Iron Chef so I picked up her memoir. I enjoyed her story and I'm glad I read it. Adopted by a family with a Greek father, Cat learned to cook some amazing Greek food. There are some recipes in the back. Cooking As Fast As I Can does talk a lot about Cat's life growing up, the challenges she faced, and how that made her into the chef and woman she is today. Recommended.

Library Loot

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Claire from The Captive Reader and me that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library. If you’d like to participate, just write up your post-feel free to steal the button-and link it using the Mr. Linky any time during the week. And of course check out what other participants are getting from their libraries.

Still trying to get that tree category locked down for the What's In A Name Challenge.

I read an article about Laing and the book sounded interesting.

Readathon-The Start

As usual off to a late start. And today got busy. I'm going to look at cars (time to replace the Camry), need to find my Halloween costume, and general life stuff (laundry, groceries). I still plan to read as much as I can.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? A suburb south of Seattle.

2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

It's a graphic novel readathon. I've got a giant stack of graphic novels and I would love to be done with them by tomorrow morning.

3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I'm heading to Trader Joe's soon for snacks.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself! 40 year old married lady. Recently bought a house. I enjoy cooking and reading.

5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

I've participated in a lot of readathons. I'm going to have fun and no stress!

I've been enjoying this series.

I rarely read manga but the title called to me.

I heard good things about this one when it came out.

Getting Ready for The October Readathon

After missing the April readathon, I made sure to put the October one on the calendar. I'm making it graphic novel day since I have a huge stack of them in my library loot. I'll also be cheerleading throughout the day too. You can sign up too at Dewey's Readathon.

Reloot. I've heard good things about this one.

Another that just looked good.

Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty
Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie

Great month! Twelve books read! I reduced my Goodreads book goal to 100. It feels more manageable especially with only 3 months left in the year.

September graphic novel reviews

Sex Criminals, Volume 3: Three the Hard Way

Meh, not as good as the first two. Fraction is still funny but the story got lost towards the end.

Hawkeye, Vol. 6: Hawkeyes
Another meh one. Solid story but I like Clint more than Kate.

Star Wars: Lando
Good story just about Lando. I'm going to look For more Star Wars graphic novels.

The Nameless City
Good story about a city that's been conquered so much no one knows it's true name. Talks about being different and being kind to those different than you.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties
I love Gaiman. The story was interesting, a little short. But still good.

Saga, Volume 6
Probably my favorite so far. Love the action. And getting to know Hazel more.

I spotted this on the library shelf. Since I'm always interested in POC especially women in graphic novels, I picked it up.

Probably the 80th time I've picked Jellicoe Road up from the library. I want to read it. Just time always slips by. I've heard such good things. Perhaps this will be the time I read it.

Two Very Different Love Stories (Two Quick Reviews)

Ockler's books on my tbr list. I think I picked up The Summer of Chasing Mermaids a couple of times before actually reading it. Elyse came to this sleepy Oregon town following an accident that left her with no voice. All of Elyse's dreams were dashed. Christian is the golden boy but he's deeply unhappy. When Elyse and Christian meet they realize that perhaps they can find a plan B. This book wasn't like a lot of YA love stories. Sure, pretty girl meets hot guy, sparks fly. I felt like this was much more adult. Elyse and Christian get caught up in town politics. I felt like the sex scenes were more adult. Elyse talks about masterbating which I don't think I've read in a YA book. I'll be picking up more of Ockler's books.

Make It Count was highly recommended on Goodreads. I usually don't like New Adult books. I've tried a few but not enjoyed any of them. But Make It Count had a little more depth which I really enjoyed. Kat struggles in school. She wants to graduate college but her classes give her a lot of trouble. Kat get matched with a new tutor, her boyfriend's nerdy best friend, Alec. Alec is just looking to get through his senior year. He doesn't need Kat to upend his life. I liked that both Alec and Kat weren't perfect. Both had a lot going on in their lives. I liked that they helped each other. I'll read more of Erickson's books.
