Weekend Cooking: Yamatoimo

If you like me 2 years ago, when you read the title of this post, you were like yama-what? Today we are talking about Yamatoimo or Japanese mountain potato. It looks like this:
And Tai loves it. He mostly ordered it at Japanese restaurants but it's not super common. When we spotted whole yamatoimo at our local Asian market and he asked me to try to prepare it at home. Since I'm trying to make more Japanese dishes, I decided to give a whirl.

The potato needs to be peeled. After you peel it, it becomes slimy. Think cooked okra. Then it's diced, lemon juice and soy sauce is added to taste. The it's topped with seaweed, fresh tuna, and bonito flakes.
Quick, easy, light meal. I think it will be a favorite come summer.

  1. One of my favorite veggies is potato, but I've never seen or heard of this kind. I'll have to look for it at the farmers market.

  2. I'm definitely in the yama what group! I don't think I've ever seen this. I'll have to check my farmers' markets and the Asian grocery.

  3. Yep, I'm another 'yama, what' person. Very interesting. The slimy part is a little off-putting, but I may be one of the only people I know that actually liked cooked okra. Most in my area would only consider fried okra. So you just peel it and dice it and don't cook it? I'd have to think about that. LOL
