2015 Goals In Review

How did I go on my goals in 2015?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. I did this pretty well until late in the summer when Tai removed dairy from his diet. No meat to me means cheese. I'd like to explore other options.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. Overall I ended the year the same weight I started the year at. But I'm able to lift more weight and bike further than I've ever have. 2015 was the year I made friends with exercise. I'm looking forward to uping my fitness in 2016.

3. Go back to meal planning. Overall I did well with this. I just failed to keep showing you my meal plans.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. This was a great goal and I accomplished more often than not.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We did 2 trips this year and looking forward to more travel in 2016.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Failed. Didn't even start on this one.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I did so well on this one at the beginning of the year. This one will continue over to 2016.

8. Do one things for myself a month. I did pretty good at this. This will continue in 2016.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I needed some mechanism to keep track. I also I suck at watching anything at home.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes. I made: Yakisoba, Yamatoimo, Gyudon, gyoza, and Chashu.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've got a lot to be grateful for. I curbed my complaining for a while but it came back. I noticed that when I take care of myself it's easier to be grateful.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. I took 3 classes total this year. Looking forward to taking more in 2016.

November Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Still trying to figure out the wheat and dairy free meal situation.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I had a non scale victory the other day. I had to sprint for the bus. Usually that would have left me panting for most of the ride to work but this time, I needed no recovery time. I'm building some serious endurance.

3. Go back to meal planning. This has been happening.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. I don't think I got a full stay home weekend but I did get a couple of days to stay home.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We did 2 trips this year and no more for the rest of the year.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. This will probably wait for next year.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I planned to do some on Thanksgiving weekend but time got a way from me.

8. Do one things for myself a month. Nothing this month!

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. Can't remember but I think I did watch something.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes. I just realized I completed all 5 dishes: Yakisoba, Yamatoimo, Gyudon, gyoza, and Chashu.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. I took 3 classes total this year. Looking forward to taking more in 2016.

October Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Not happen right now. Tai's cut wheat and dairy from his diet. I don't feel like trying to figure out dairy free meatless meals right now.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. Still loving my kettlebells and biking. No movement on the scale but my clothes are fitting better.

3. Go back to meal planning. This has been happening.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. I don't think I got a full stay home weekend but I did get a couple of days to stay home.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We went to Westport for a long weekend. It was lovely and we can't wait for next year to go back. We also want to stay there longer.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this. This will probably wait for next year.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I'm going to start ramping up on the cleaning and decluttering.

8. Do one things for myself a month. Got a pedicure.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. Watched Big Trouble In Little China. Good movie.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Haven't thought about what I want to make.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. The tamale class was good. I would take more classes from that site.

September Goal Review

How did I do this month on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. I pinned a couple of ideas. Have yet to execute them.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. Still working on my kettlebells. I threw biking into the mix and having fun with that. Sadly it's getting colder here so outdoor biking is less likely but I'm going to continue with stationary biking.

3. Go back to meal planning. Need to start posting my meal plans.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. September was busy but we had one do nothing weekend. October is super busy too.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We went on a short weekend getaway to Bremerton last weekend. We have another short trip planned next month.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. Still moving slowly on this one.

8. Do one things for myself a month. Got a pedicure, a hair cut and went to the spa!

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Still nothing here/

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. The meat class I took in September was amazing. I hope I can make a few of the dishes we learned. I'm looking forward to tamales in a couple of weeks!

August Goal Update

How did I do this month on my goals?  Woo Hoo! Posting this 2 months in a row!

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. It's starting to get cooler so I foresee starting this again.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. Really building my weight lifting abilities. I'm getting close to my goal of using the 16kg kettlebell for my kettlebell work outs. I have my next goal all lined up already. I haven't weighed myself in a while but clothes are still fitting looser. I was able to add yoga back to my workouts and I have been so grateful for that. Yoga really helps me feel better so it's important to me to attempt to continue it.

3. Go back to meal planning. Back on the meal planning weekend.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. August was super busy but we had lots of downtime too.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We've planned a little weekend trip at the end of September.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. Slow going this month. Didn't complete a room. I need to schedule a day for the donation truck to come by. That will help get my butt in gear.

8. Do one things for myself a month. Got a pedicure.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Nothing this month.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. Looking forward to my meat class in Sept and my tamale class in October.

July Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals? I forgot to do this June. I don't think anything notable happened in June anyway.

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Sadly it's been to hot to cook so we've been eating lots of take out and not any meatless meals. I'm looking forward to cooler weather and cooking again.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. Still plugging away on my fitness. My pants are looser but no weight loss on the scale yet.

3. Go back to meal planning. Again, really not cooking a whole lot. Too damn hot.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. It's been busy but still trying to stay home at least one day on the weekends. So far so good.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Tossed around a couple of ideas but will likely wait to the fall or winter.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. Going to get back into it in August.

8. Do one things for myself a month. Got a pedicure. I did go to the spa in June.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Made gyoza.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. Took a knife skills class. Learned that I already know a lot about cutting food. Also learned how to care for my knives better. Have a meat class and a tamale class planned for the next couple of months too.

Weekend Cooking: Bento Box in The Heartland by Linda Furiya

I picked up Bento Box in the Heartland for a couple of reasons. I love Japanese food and I like immigrant stories. Furiya was born in the US but her parent's immigrated from Japan. I enjoyed the stories Furiya told as well as all the recipes and food related tidbits.

Furiya grew up in small town Indiana in the mid 60's to late 70's. Her stories show the prejudice she faced and some of the hardships she and her family endured. I enjoyed the stories about her parents and how she was raised. I loved the stories about her favorite foods and how her mom prepared them. Furiya has 2 brothers but they are mostly mentioned in passing.

Furiya not only talks about the food but some of the traditions her parents brought with them. I liked the fact that her parents tried hard to bring a little bit of Japan to their small Indiana town. I also loved the relationship between her parents. Her mom was especially funny but her dad was kind.

A lot of the book talks about the foods her parents made and took them to eat. I loved her trip to Japan and all the yummy food details she includes. Japanese food wasn't easy to find in the Midwest when Furiya's parents arrived, They had to trek to big cities like Chicago to find ingredients. They would go every couple of weeks to stock up and even then her parents worried they would run out of ingredients. Her parents hoarded food and worried when they might not be able to make it an Asian grocery store.

Furiya includes a recipe at the end of each chapter. I decided to make gyoza. Her recipe is very similar to this one.
I made a batch of just pork and cabbage and another batch with pork and kimchi (just mixed chopped up kimchi with the pork and a little sake).
First batch ready to be cooked.
The finished product!

I've never made gyoza before. It was a lot of work. I made 120 gyoza in about 4 hours. The cooking part took the longest. But they were delicious. Everyone loved them.

Furiya has another book about her time in China, How To Cook A Dragon. I might pick that one up too. Others who shared their thoughts on Bento Box In The Heartland: You Think Too Much, Shelf Life, and What Did You Eat?.
This is my fourth read for The Foodies Read Challenge.

May Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals? Apparently I forgot to post about my April progress so I'll include that in this update.

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Just a couple of fritattas. I kind of fell off the meatless wagon when Tai asked me to limit the dairy in our dinners. Most of the meatless meals I know how to make rely on cheese. And now it's too hot for me to make elaborate meals. Not that meatless have to be elaborate. Anyway, I'm still working on it.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I'm still doing my kettlebell workouts. I've added a couple of dumbell workouts too to work on my back and chest. I have a pinterest board for workouts.

3. Go back to meal planning. Totally fallen off the wagon. It's way too hot for me to really cook. So meal planning has been salads and more salads.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. June is when we get really busy but Tai's injured his calf muscle so volleyball has been out for him. Which was usually causes us to be busy. I'm enjoying the respite.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Tossed around a couple of ideas but will likely wait to the fall or winter.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. Fell off the wagon here too. Just haven't had the motivation.

8. Do one things for myself a month. I had a massage and went to the spa.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Haven't thought about this recently.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I've been a lot better about this.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. This will wait til the fall.

April Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Zuchinni Fritatta, Spinach Fritatta, and Tofu Curry this month. I did make a Pinterest board for Meatless Meals but I have yet to use any meals. And if fritattas work shouldn't I keep making them?

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I'm working on my kettlebell workouts. (The Ultimate Full-Body Kettlebell Workout and 500 rep Kettlebell workout). Trying to go the whole routine with 8kg kettlebells. It's hard!

3. Go back to meal planning. Still working it. Going great!

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. We were able to keep one weekend empty in April. Keeping one weekend empty in May. When summer really starts this will be harder.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Tossed around a couple of ideas but will likely wait to the fall or winter.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I had wanted to do this last weekend but couldn't find the time and honestly the motivation.

8. Do one things for myself a month. I went to the spa and I got a massage!

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  Didn't even think about this goal.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. Yoga was really helping me with this. I need to find a way to continue.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. Thinking this might wait til the fall.

March Goals Update

How did I do this month on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. Just one meatless meal this whole month! Spinach Artichoke Egg Casserole which wasn't a winner. I need to make a pinterest board for meatless meals.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I started March with a bit of a cold. That kept me from my workouts. I knew if I hit the gym, my tiny cold would morph into a huge cold and I would forced to stay home. I had zero sick time and too many obligations. So the first 10 days of March were workout free. But I missed working out so as soon as I could I headed back to the gym. I've been alternating between these two kettlebell workouts (The Ultimate Full-Body Kettlebell Workout and 500 rep Kettlebell workout). I've already increased the weight in both. I started with 4kg and now I'm using 8kg. My goal is to be able to do both workouts completely with 16kg at the end of the year. I love seeing the gains I'm making.

3. Go back to meal planning. Still working it. Going great!

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. March was busy. The last weekend was nice and not busy. I was able to stay home most of the weekend. April is super busy so I will have to fight hard to keep one weekend empty.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Tossed around a couple of ideas but will likely wait to the fall or winter.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I didn't do any cleaning in the house but we completely cleaned out my dad's old place. I think that is enough for this month.

8. Do one things for myself a month. I meant to go to the spa but life got too busy. I'm planning on a massage next month.

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I need to keep better track of this. I'm sure I did watch at least one older movie this month.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  I made Gyudon,Yamatoimo, and Yakisoba. So I've made 4 dishes total. I have no idea what the next one will be.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I think I'm complaining less but I'd like to start thanking (seriously) thanking people more.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. I failed to follow up on the one I looked at last month. Maybe in the summer. April is way too busy.

February Goals Update

How did I do in February on my goals for this year?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. A little better this month. We had Chickpea and Kale Soup, Spinach Fritatta, and Vegan Red Cabbage Bowls with Tofu and Peanut Sauce. Still trying to find meatless meals that we'll like besides the fritatta.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I kept gaining and losing the same 2 pounds all month. I've been doing this kettlebell workout and I was able to add another set! I started out doing 3 sets and now I can do 4. I'll be able to add the 5th one soon. I'm also starting to notice more definition in my legs and chest.

3. Go back to meal planning. Still working it. Going great!

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. February was busy but we two nice stay at home weekends. March is getting full so I'm trying to protect that one empty weekend.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Haven't even thought about it yet.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I worked on my "getting ready room" (our downstairs 2nd bedroom). I didn't have a lot of time, just one afternoon but I tried to get as much done as I could. Here's before:
A pile of boots by the door. A lot of wasted space!
How it looks now. A little better organized. Still not sure how to deal with my boots. But I got 2 boxes of stuff ready to donate!

8. Do one things for myself a month. I went to the spa again and got my hair cut. Two things this month. Amazing!

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. I saw Howl's Moving Castle which I wanted to see after I read the book.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes.  None this month but I will have 3 to show you in March!

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. Getting better. I have a lot to be thankful for!

12. Take 2 cooking classes. I looked at few and might sign up for one later in March.

January 2015 Goals Update

How did I do in January on my goals?

1. Make one meatless meal for dinner a week. We ate Bacon-Cheddar Cauliflower Chowder and Spinach Frittata. One week didn't happen. So far everyone's ok with eating meatless once a week. And bacon so doesn't count.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs.  I went to the gym 12 times in January and once to yoga. Yoga is my new favorite thing. I didn't think I would like hot yoga but I do. It's pretty relaxing. No new weight lost but glad I'm maintaining what I've already lost.

3. Go back to meal planning. I'm doing it. It's working!

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. I added this goal more for the summer and holiday time but the end of January got a little busy. We stayed home and did nothing 2 weekends out of the month.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. Haven't even thought about this one.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents. Haven't even thought about this.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. I decided to start easy and do our downstairs hall closet. Here's the before shots:
Total chaos. I kept trying to make things neat but there was no organization. Plus tons of wasted space.
Here's the after:
So much better and an empty shelf and a half (which are still empty). It feels so much better. And I can see what we have now.

8. Do one things for myself a month. I went to the spa for my birthday. I can't wait for my next spa visit!

9. Watch one older (pre-2014) movie a month. Fail. I watched Ride Along and The Grand Budapest Hotel but those are both from 2014. Sigh.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes. I made chashu. I still want to make ramen but I need the time to make the broth from scratch.

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. So hard. Especially at work. I bitch all day long. I do find that yoga is helping me quiet my mind so maybe it'll help with the complaining.

12. Take 2 cooking classes. Ashley had a couple she wan interested in but they sold out before we could sign up. We'll keep trying.

Twelve Goals for 2015

I stopped making resolutions a long time ago. It was always the same thing-lose weight and get out of debt. The getting out of debt part is done (whew!) and I'm working on the losing weight (30 lbs down). But I want to set some goals for the year. Give me something to work on.

These are my non-bookish goals. My bookish ones can be found here.

1. Make one meatless dinner a week. We are carnivores. We eat a lot of meat. But eating vegetarian one night a week would help the budget and add variety to our diet.

2. Continue working on my fitness and lose another 30 lbs. I'm having fun making my gym routine something to look forward to. I stick to things that are fun to me and I listen to an audiobook while working out. I've signed up at a yoga studio so I'm looking forward to adding yoga back to my routine.

3. Go back to meal planning.  I fell off the meal planning wagon late last year. It was really helpful budget-wise. I've got to start again.

4. Schedule one do nothing, stay home weekend a month. Sometimes we get so busy where we are out both Saturday and Sunday. Nothing gets done at home. And when that happens 3 weekends in a row, the house becomes a disaster.

5. Plan one trip with Tai this year. We talk about going somewhere for a long weekend but never follow through. Even if it's a day trip, we should plan something.

6. Get a will and other necessary estate planning documents done. I work in the aging field and know what happens when people don't plan what they want to do when they are incapacitated. I hope we won't need these documents for a long time but I want to start the conversation.

7. Clean and declutter one room a month. That would be our living room, our bedroom, our spare bedroom (ie my getting ready room), the downstairs hall closet, the upstairs hall closet, the pantry, and the kitchen. I'll even offer to help my dad with his bedroom and office.

8. Do one thing for myself a month. Get a hair cut, a massage, hang out at the spa. Sometimes months go by without me doing anything for myself.

9. Watch older movie (pre-2014) a month. I'm great a going to the movies in theaters but suck at watching older movies at home. Plus it would be something to do on those do nothing weekends. Three movies to start with: Blade Runner, 2001, and Akira.

10. Learn to make 5 Japanese dishes. I keep wanting to learn to make more Japanese food. I even have a cookbook. I just need to start doing it. And I should post about them. You all want to know about my adventures in Japanese cooking, right?

11. Stop complaining and start sharing my gratitude. I have a tendency to bitch about life's inconveniences. I have a lot to be thankful for-a wonderful, loving partner, good friends, a safe place to live, and enough money for the necessities and sometimes the luxuries.

12. Take 2 cooking classes-one skill building (like a knife class) and one food related (like a Thai class or a tamale making class). I've taken cooking classes before and I enjoy doing it. I'd like to improve my kitchen skills and learn to make new dishes.

Every month I'll post my progress on these goals.

Do you have any goals this year?
